Maggie has been professionally offering training and behavior services for over 18 years. She is a Knowledge Assessed Certified Trainer with the Certification Counsel of Professional Dog Trainers, a member of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, a previous FSDS Service Dog Trainer and Evaluator, and a certified Fear-Free Shelter Professional.
In 2005, her first volunteer internship was working in animal rescue for the Humane Society of Utah and Weber County Animal Services and it was there she found her passion for behavior work. From 2008-2017 Maggie served as District Manager of Training and Boarding for a nationally recognized training program after completing several additional internships, moving on to managing 27 training facilities and daycare facilities where she helped shape the program to use effective, science based methods of training. In 2017, Maggie opened her first facility, The Dog Complex, LLC in Tucson, AZ where she offered dog sport and behavior-focused classes and day training including barn hunt, agility and urban herding. From 2019-2022 Maggie lived in the bay area and served as Behavior Manager at Pets In Need animal shelter, overseeing and developing the behavior program at both their shelter locations.
She has worked on national level projects partnering with Human Animal Support Services and Maddie’s Fund working on projects with focuses ranging from redefining canine bite scales and forensics, to redefining enrichment and training protocol standards of care and developing effective behavior monitoring methods. Other projects include study design and research on shelter animal engagement and in-kennel behavior including case studies and in-shelter testing protocols for dogs and cats.
She has been featured on NEWS 4 TUCSON KVOA-4 for her Urban Herding Program and has co-hosted the podcast Your Dogs Best Life since 2020.
In addition to working at Behavior Vets, Maggie teaches other training and behavior professionals in her Advanced Conceptual Learning in Canines course at Fur and Featherworks, LLC in Reno, Nevada. She also owns The Behavior Gurus, LLC offering services to Reno and the greater northern California area.
Maggie has a diverse volunteer background including work with the retired racing greyhounds at Southern Arizona Greyhound Rescue. She also has worked with a variety of species on issues ranging from aggression to manageability, cooperative care, and husbandry at the Rancho CompasiĆ³n farmed animal sanctuary. When it comes to dogs, Maggie’s special behavior and training interests include aggression, frustration, and arousal-based cases, particularly when triggers include family members and other household pets. She also enjoys working cases related to canine compulsive disorders.
In her spare time, Maggie enjoys hiking, home brewing craft beer, vegetable gardening and clicker training her flock of 8 chickens. She resides with her border collie, Diller, an expert wild morel mushroom hunter, canine musical freestyle and freestyle disc competitor, and her senior Afghan hound, Ralph, an accomplished couch lounger, in Reno, Nevada.
